Not to kill more than he needs

And the wolf tells the waif

That you must kill

(The Wolf and the Waif, Gardiner/Gardiner)

Michael

The Hertford gig went fine. No one there seemed angry at their Swedish trip, but then they hadn’t cancelled on them, either. Jamie was only slightly off, and the rest of Pax managed to keep the whole thing on track until the end. But instead of staying over at the campsite – are you crazy, after all that’s happened? – they obeyed Evan’s orders and took the late night train back to London, to collapse in their own beds. It was the right decision, of course – they could always trust Evan to have their best interests at heart – and for two days, Michael and Jamie barely left the apartment. Not counting the funeral, it was a long time since they’d had any time off, and they made the most of it by watching TV and surviving on crackers and lemonade.

But of course the reprieve couldn’t last. Two days later, Michael woke to the trembling realisation that it was time. The BBC was waiting, and Pax had no choice but to go out there and excel.

In a way, it was predestined. This was what he’d been dreaming about his whole life – ever since that day when he first picked up a guitar and wore his fingers raw trying to conquer the B7 chord. In the most secret part of his heart, he’d always had his sights set on Top of the Pops. It was the ultimate badge of success, after all. No one who appeared on the show was ever a nobody again.

He’d just never believed that he would actually make it there.

So why was there a rumble of thunder at the back of his mind, darker than the clouds over the standing stones of Salisbury Plain?

“Michael?” came a soft croak from beside him. Michael turned over to see a half-awake Jamie, smiling blearily.

Michael grinned, feeling warm and fuzzy around the edges. “Morning.”

“Mmh,” Jamie sighed and burrowed deeper into the covers. His face was rosy from sleep, and blond wisps of hair fell into his eyes. It was all Michael could do not to grab him and turn him over for a merciless fuck. “I’m… sorry about the other day.” Jamie’s hand lay between them on the pillow, and he stretched out a finger to stroke Michael’s cheek. “Okay?”

Michael nodded, never taking his eyes off Jamie’s face. “Of course.”

Rummaging under the covers, Jamie snuggled closer and buried his face in Michael’s neck. Laying an arm over his shoulders, Michael was awash with a sudden memory: the whiteness in Jamie’s eyes, the trembling…

But he was okay now. Everything was okay.

With a sigh, Jamie closed his fingers on Michael’s arm, caressed the faint bulge of muscle. “I love you.”

“I l…” Michael swallowed. In place of words, he tugged a little at Jamie’s hair. “Idiot.”

Jamie laughed softly, a welcome echo from Before. Before what, Michael didn’t really know.
